Jo Hoffberg has been running partner dance intensives since 2015. During the pandemic, she had ample time to invest in her solo dancing and is now thrilled to recreate the Lindy Tech environment with a focus on the individual dancer!

Previously, Lindy Techs focused on partner dynamics and what skills were necessary to better speak and listen to a partner. Going even deeper, Jo is excited to dig into what makes a great dancer at Flying Solo: rhythmbody awarenessdynamicsimprovisation, and intuition.

This small group, TRAINING WEEKEND INTENSIVE will focus on what it means to be a dancer (in this Black American art form), how to train without a partner, and to be unique in style + voice.

This weekend is ideal for the student:

  • looking to improve the quality of their movement (to improve your partner movement, you also need to work on the solo movement)

  • who enjoys a good party, but is interested in a highly-focused training weekend

  • ready to be challenged, in a highly-structured + freeform learning environment (yup, a balance of both)

  • who is ready to push themselves to get the most out of the weekend (dedicated-learners ftw!!!)

Level: intermediate and up (brave beginners are welcome) - since the pandemic, Jo has taught mostly open level classes (because, it was the time of Zoom Classes) and can absolutely make the exercises more challenging if for some *wild* reason you are not feeling challenged :D

What this weekend is NOT:

  • this is not a typical "Solo Jazz" weekend. We will use jazz steps as reference points, but we are working on general movement, body awareness and control, rhythm, how to use your arms, etc, instead of memorizing tons of vocabulary.

  • choreography-based: perhaps we'll use a classic jazz routine as a foundation, but the weekend is about exploration, not memorization and performance (don't get her wrong, Jo LOVES those things, but this weekend isn't about it.
